College to hold ‘AugustFest’ event

MiraCosta College holds “AugustFest,” a family-friendly event, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday at its San Elijo campus. The festival will showcase the variety of classes available through the college’s community enrichment and work skills development department. There will also be food trucks, live music, artisan and craft vendors and a kids’ zone. Interactive demonstrations will highlight career-track certificate programs and enrichment classes, including craft beer brewing and FAA certification as a drone aviation pilot. AugustFest will also promote local nonprofits, which will be on hand to raise awareness about resources available to those needing assistance. Advance tickets are $10 per adult, and children 18 and younger are free. Same-day tickets are $15. Tickets will include three flight wine and three flight beer tastings and are available at bit.ly/3p8Kt2W. The campus is at 3333 Manchester Ave., Cardiff. Visit commed.miracosta.edu.

Group provides duffel bags to grads

The Assistance League of Inland North County recently provided nearly 60 duffel bags for graduating seniors experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in the Escondido Union High School District through their Operation Duffel Bag Program. The students each received a bag with more than 40 items worth about $400, including a personal blender, bungee cords, laundry bag and detergent, a sleeping bag and sleeping pad, $125 worth of gift cards, a solar-operated battery pack, kitchen tools, a pillow and blanket, first aid and tool kits, and personal hygiene products. The nonprofit has supported the district’s students experiencing homelessness for nearly a decade through numerous programs. Over the years, the Assistance League of Inland North County has also supported district students through its Operation School Bell program, computer donations and scholarships. In the 2021-2022 school year, they provided nearly $40,000 worth of donations to students. The league’s volunteers rely on the proceeds from their Thrift Shop, at 2068 E. Valley Pkwy., to fund their philanthropic programs. Visit assistanceleague.org/inland-north-county.

County Teachers of the Year to be named

Five local teachers recognized by their districts as teachers of the year will be named as the 2022-23 San Diego County Teachers of the Year at a private reception Friday, part of the 32nd annual “Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers.” Presented by San Diego County Credit Union, “Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers” recognizes the 40 county nominees as well as the county’s 24,000-plus public school teachers. It will feature music and dance performances by local students, leading up to the announcement of the five county Teachers of the Year, who will represent the region while vying for California Teacher of the Year honors. In partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education, Cox Communications will produce a one-hour television special to recognize local teachers, spotlight the teachers of the year, and share highlights from the reception. The show will air at 9 p.m. Oct. 2 on YurView Network (Cox Channel 4). Visit salutetoteacherssd.com.
